Big Bad Voodoo Daddy will turn 30 this April and I got to see them live this past weekend…how lucky am I?!?
This is a musical group influenced by the Big Band Era. They write and cover songs where their drum and bass deliver the rhythm and a tight horn section provides a call and response.
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy hit the music scene in April of 1993. During the performance, the band leader shared that this was the same time Nirvana was at the top of the music charts and people didn’t know what to do with BBVD. Yet here they are, 30 years later, with all the original members, playing to a packed theatre of enthusiastic patrons.
What a great example of staying true to yourself! BBVD navigated through several rising and falling trends within the music industry. And they manage to stay current whilst playing music from a genre that is almost 100 years old.
When clients come to me wanting to change an unhealthy habit, many feel a heavy resistance to going against the grain. Societal or cultural norms can be an obstacle to their health: “But my family has a tradition of eating “x” every Friday night” or “But smoking cigars is part of guys night. I don’t want to lose my friendships.”
How can you be your authentic self when you are trying to create positive change?
- Identify your values- Having a rock-solid foundation of your mindset makes it easier to make decisions in the moment when you may be tempted and need to pivot.
- Get comfortable with your strengths and weaknesses- Knowing what you are good at as well as where you have opportunities for growth can set you up for success. Trying to eliminate an unhealthy habit or creating a new habit takes skill. Taking advantage of what you do well and being willing to ask for help in areas you are less confident in will take you far.
- Flex your courage muscles- We don’t grow in comfort unless you make it a practice to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. Executing little changes on a regular basis helps you get more adaptable with bigger changes.
It is hard to change. Performing these three steps help with environmental influences as you work on your health goals. I’ll add a bonus step: Don’t take yourself too seriously.
When you can enjoy the process instead of rushing to an end goal, you are much more successful with change. To pay recognition to the music scene they entered in 1993, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy broke out into “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for their finale smash-up.
