This month I shared about the movie Soylent Green and the processed wafers that citizens were desperate to consume without knowing the secret ingredient.
The simplest definition of processed, in regard to food, is to alter the form. Most foods are processed before consumption whether it be cut, ground, baked, boiled, etc. The concern with altering food is that nutrients can be lost in the process.
Losing nutrients through altering the food can create empty calories. This can cause your body to consume more volume of food because it isn’t getting enough nutrients.
The bigger concern is when things are added to your food for preservation or for marketing.
Much of the food that goes to the masses for consumption is processed to extend the shelf life of the food. In order to do this, preservatives are added. Other added ingredients are for marketing appeal. Artificial colors and chemicals are added to make something more aesthetically appealing. Additives can also be processed with the food to encourage cravings and leave you wanting to consume more.
The healthiest way to eat food is to consume it the way it is presented to you in nature. For example, plucking an apple off the tree and taking a bite out of it, skin and all.
The best kind of processed food to eat is the one you process yourself. Doing your own alterations ensures little to no nutrition is lost and no additives are mixed in.
