I was recently introduced to the 1971 Charleston Heston film, Soylent Green. After my friend explained the premise, l looked into it further.
It was based on the book, “Make Room! Make Room!” by Harry Harrison, about overpopulation and hoarding of resources by the wealthy. Since it portrayed the futurist year 2022, I thought it was worth watching to see how the people of the 1970’s envisioned the 2020’s. Their projections weren’t that far off.
Soylent Green is a government produced wafer that citizens can purchase and is one of the last food sources available to the masses. The government says it is made from sea kelp providing the basic nutrients. But what’s the secret ingredient in Soylent Green?
I don’t want to spoil it for you if you plan watch this movie. For those of you that remember what the scrappy detective uncovered, it definitely gave pause to question processed food.
So here we are still eating processed food. Can you truly identify the make up of what you are consuming?
Many times I can’t pronounce the names of half the ingredients. All the preservatives, artificial flavoring, coloring, the list goes on. Ponder on this for a bit and let’s discuss further. Next week we will dive deeper into process foods. Please share any thoughts or questions here so we can unpack it in the next blog.
