What’s in your tool box?

Have you ever been in a situation where you were somewhat embarrassed by what happened but even more embarrassed by how the situation kept unfolding?

I was having a very productive Sunday. I had baked several “thank you” gifts and was cleaning up the kitchen. As I was finishing the dishes, I went to run the garbage disposal. It turned on immediately, with a fierce roar of the blades slicing and dicing. But within seconds the blades stopped turning but the motor was still humming.

Oh no.

I turned it off and on a few times, but no changes. I suspected something had wound around the base of the blade and, if I could reverse the blade, it would unwind what was stuck.

I finished the rest of the cleaning and then retrieved an Alan wrench. After several minutes of fiddling around with the disposal, I was no closer to solving the problem.

I unplugged the disposal and stuck my hand in to explore. The blades were stuck alright but it took a while to figure out that something was off to the side and lodged under the blade. Once I could locate it, I shined a light down the hole.

The 1/4 teaspoon had strayed from its posse of measuring spoons and was now wedged between the wall of the disposal and the blade.

I pulled.

I pushed.

I grabbed it with pliers and twisted it.

I could feel it bending slightly, but the 1/4 teaspoon was no closer to being unstuck.

I spent half an hour trying to manhandle this little teaspoon. I had heard of a wrench getting thrown into the works, but a 1/4 teaspoon? (Grumble, grumble)

I finally threw up the white flag…I called my neighbor.

“This is embarrassing”, I started, “A spoon is stuck in my disposal and I’m not strong enough to get it out.”

He came over with this long set of pliers I had never seen before. He retrieved the spoon within 15 seconds.

So embarrassing! So weak 😦

My neighbor assured me it had nothing to do with my upper body strength. “You just didn’t have the right tool to get the proper leverage on the spoon.”

This got me thinking about the tools I have for my mindset.

Why was I so stuck on the thought that I was weak? Why couldn’t I see what other truth was possible at that moment?

So, the most embarrassing part of this event ended up being my limiting belief /:
