We use this Memorial Day Weekend to honor those who died serving the United States Military. This is one way to not only give thanks but to feel connected to individuals that have passed.
So many rituals in society pay tribute to loved ones that have left us too soon. If you interview individuals, you will hear a variety of ways they stay connected with the dead. Whether it’s through prayer, waving a flag, placing flowers on a grave, seeing a symbol in nature, or hearing a song randomly come on the radio…all of these are ways we feel connected beyond a physical realm. How do you support your spiritual health? How do you feel connected with the ones you can no longer physically hug? How do you summon inner peace when faced with adversity?
My grandfather did not die while serving, although the Purple Heart he received tells me he came close. I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to know him and spend time with him. I thank the individuals who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and my heart goes out to their families for having to endure such a loss.
