Is Hair Loss Solely Genetic?

Hair loss can be a sensitive subject for men. Growing up, we thought that male pattern baldness was hereditary and was passed on by the X chromosome. Because of this, my brother would express gratitude that all the men on my mom’s side had a full head of hair. More recent studies have shown that there are over 200 variants of genetic markers associated with male pattern baldness and hair loss.

Does this mean you have to helplessly shrug your shoulders and accept defeat? While we are at the mercy of pre-determined hereditary factors, you can be proactive to an extent. Small actions can make a difference. Let’s get to the root of hair loss.

External Factors

Sleep Deprivation-I can’t express enough the importance of proper sleep hygiene! Getting a good night’s sleep is crucial for overall health. The hair follicle can weaken over time with chronic fatigue.

Excessive Stress- This can piggyback on sleep deprivation as lack of sleep can make simple tasks more cumbersome. Adequate sleep, time management, and healthy coping techniques are ways to minimize stress.

Smoking- I prefer to offer suggestions of what to do instead of telling you what not to do, but nothing good comes from smoking. This is one of those things where there are no benefits and at a great cost. Smoking, from a hair loss perspective, causes a weakened immune system, poor circulation, and environmental pollution…all of which negatively impact the hair growth cycle. This can cause premature loss and grey.

While the list of hair loss contributors goes on, these are three things you can start with to be proactive. Balance stress, get some sleep, and replace smoking with a better habit. Not only will you help the hair cause, but you will also save money and feel better overall.
