Does it Have to be Either / Or?
Thanks for all the responses to the first post. Great discussion on all the concerns that come with this topic! In the first post, I raised a red flag on the fact that I heard 11 erectile dysfunction ads on the radio within a one-hour program. Several people chimed in to cover everything from age to cultural norms. Let’s unpack a few.
Aging is real and not for the weak of heart! All of us come up against Father Time and our bodies may not serve us like they once did. Blood vessels break down over time, decreasing blood flow. We can accept this reality and simultaneously do maintenance to minimize the blow.
There are several foods that promote vascular health. Salmon, spinach, and cayenne pepper just to name a few. There are also activities that help the cause too: walking, weight lifting, and refraining from smoking.
Another attributer to ED is inflammation. Some ways to avoid inflammation are to eat an anti-inflammatory diet and floss your teeth.
One of the biggest things you can do to help the cause is to address your mindset! I used the term “perceived problem” when I referenced erectile dysfunction and want to explore this further. I say this, not to dismiss ED, but to reduce the mental anguish men place on themselves.
I have heard self-deprecating jokes, discouragement, avoidance, and hostility come out of men’s mouths when they feel their performance is sub-par. I would encourage you to challenge these thoughts.
Ask yourself, “What am I gaining by holding on to this negative belief?” Ask yourself, “Why do I put so much importance on this one aspect of myself?” Ask your spouse, “How do you feel about my performance?” I bet if you dive deep into these inquiries you will find you are your own worst critic.
Back to these ads: I am not dissing modern medicine; I am simply imploring that men look at ways they can complement these interventions and possibly avoid the perceived problem altogether.
